MATT DAMON: SPOKESPERSON FOR EDUCATION?

I was surprised to learn that Matt Damon spoke at the "Save Our Schools" March last weekend. His mom is a teacher and she introduced him before his speech. I have posted the 5-minute video below and would be interested to hear your feedback.

If you are an educator or not, what is your opinion of Mr. Damon's comments?

Outside of his mother's comments about a standardized test, Matt Damon told no specifics about the great teachers he had. He said many words but told only one story. And the one he told illustrated a parent more than a teacher. Of course, in five minutes, you can be substantive or you can be encouraging. Both are valid. He chose encouraging, IMHO.

I agree with what he said..

I just don't get it. we used to spend about 2 months preparing for this test...

but now, they tell me it's all year!

don't they teach anything else?

why can't all the teachers from a certain subject all get together from the same district and draw up a good yearly lesson plan and that's it! test that! a lesson plan with actual learning on real subjects...

Tom, I agree. Not much substance - mainly a pep talk. Thanks for the comment.

Arny, states typically have mandated standardized tests. In my state, Louisiana, you have to pass the standardized test in 4th and 8th grades to move on. It's a complex issue. The best teachers teach (with a little test prep) and their students tend to do just fine. Thanks for the comments.
